Tramadol is a painkiller. It calms down the feeling of pain. It is mostly used to get relief from severe pain.
It is advised to take when normal medication doesn’t work in pain. Tramadol should be only taken when it is prescribed by doctor as it’s habit forming medication especially with prolonged use.
Tramadol is in a family of medications called narcotic analgesics. It works by reducing the feel of pain.

How to Use Tramadol?
Tramadol is a CNS depressant. It slow downs the feeling of nerves connecting to brain that controls sense of feeling. As soon as you take tramadol it reduce down the feeling of pain. As recommended tramadol should not be taken more often.
How to take tramadol:
Tramadol comes in form of tablet and in form of capsules to take orally. There are 2 kinds of tramadol tablets/ capsules regular ones and the another one is extended release tablets/ capsules.
Regular tramadol tablets / capsules is usually taken with or without food in the period of 4 to 6 hours as needed. And the extended release tramadol tablets/ capsules should be taken once a day with or without food. It’s best when tramadol tablets/ capsules are taken on a fixed schedule. If you are taking it without food take it without food every day and if you are taking with food then take it with food every day as well as it’s best when tramadol tablets/ capsules are taken on a particular time. Try to fix a time to take this tablet and take it on that time only. Take tramadol tablets/capsules as directed by your doctor.
Caution – Do not overdose or stop tramadol. Taking tramadol rather than prescribed can cause serious side effects or death.
Who should not take tramadol?
- Asthama patients
- Those who have breathing problem
- If there is any blockage in stomach or intestine
- If you have recently consumed alcohol, sedatives, tranquilizers or any other narcotic medications. • If you have used MAO inhibitor in past 14 days that includes (isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene, blue injection, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, or tranylcypromine).
NOTE – Tramadol should not be given to child below than 12 years. ULTRA ER should not be given to child below than 18 years.
- Do not give tramadol to below 18 years old who recently have gone through surgery to remove tonsils or adenoids.
- Do not give tramadol to children between 12-18 years who have breathing issues.
Chances of seizures who are taking tramadol:
Seizures have caused to some people who are taking tramadol. Consult with your doctor immediately if you suffer same. Higher chances of seizures if you ever had –
- A head surgery
- Or other seizure disorder
- If you also use any antidepressants, muscle relaxant, opioids or any other medicines.
Should pregnant women take tramadol?
If you take tramadol in pregnancy, baby could become dependent on the drug. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a baby because this can cause life threatening problems in the baby after it is born.
NOTE – Do not breast feed while taking tramadol. This can cause breathing problems and death in a nursing baby.
Side effects of tramadol:
Consult your doctor immediately if you suffer an allergic reaction to tramadol.

- Swelling in your face or throat

- Burning in your eyes
- Sore throat
- Skin pain
- Skin rash
- Peeling skin
Tramadol is narcotic medicine so it can slow down your breathing. Caution: death may occur If breathing becomes too low.
When to call your doctor?
- Noisy breathing, shallow breathing, breathing that stops during sleep.
- Slow heart rate, fast heart rate, weak pulse.
- Light-headed feeling.
- Missed menstrual periods.
- Sexual problems, loss of interest in sex.
- Nausea, vomiting, dizziness.
- Tiredness, weakness.
- Muscle stiffness
NOTE – serious side effects are more likely to occur in older adults, overweight, malnourished or debilitated.
It may effect fertility in both men and women.
What should be avoid while taking tramadol?
Avoid taking alcohol. Consult your doctor for proper diet plan.
Does tramadol affect fertility?
Yes, tramadol affects fertility of both men and women also it decrease the sexual desire in both men and women if they are consuming tramadol.
Interaction of tramadol with other medications:
Tramadol can interact with other medications you may be taking and this can prevent the drug from working it’s activity well.
To avoid such situation you should tell your doctor other medications you are taking as well. Drugs that interact with tramadol-
- Depression drugs
- Headache drugs
- Anti-psychotic drugs
These are some common medications that should be avoided with tramadol.
NOTE – Carbamazepine should be totally avoided while taking tramadol as it decrease the affect of tramadol and increase the risk of seizures.
The dosage of tramadol depends on –
- Your age
- Your condition in which you are getting treated
- Other medications you are taking
- Reaction on you after the first dose
Drink enough water, consume fiber and exercise can help to prevent constipation while consuming tramadol.
Getting up slowly when sitting or lying may reduce the risk of dizziness.
Always remember to contact your doctor when have any serious problem after consultation tramadol.
Before using tramadol, tell your doctor your previous history of medications and allergies if you have any. In the case of injury too you should tell your doctor before starting tramadol especially head injury, tumor or seizures, asthma, liver or kidney disease.
If you have ever experienced suicidal thoughts, depression, confusion you should tell your doctor in brief about your history.
Do not indulge in any activity that needs alertness like driving, operating machinery etc. As this drug may lead you to dizziness. Avoiding alcohol beverages and cannabis is a good option while consuming tramadol.
MAO inhibitors with tramadol may cause serious drug interaction. Most of MAO should be avoided before two weeks of tramadol medication. Other medications can lead to removal of tramadol form your body.
If the person has consumed more than recommended dose and suffering from serious symptoms as passion out, heavy breathing naloxone can be given if available right there then to call emergency.
Note – you can not share this medication with any other person. It is illegal.
About naloxone you should ask your doctor once if you can treat yourself with that or not.
